n June of 1973, Dellview Baptist Church in San Antonio sponsored a Vacation Bible School in the Bulverde area to determine possible interest in planting a church. This Vacation Bible School was held at the home of Bonnie and Mike Cejka with the help of Gay Morgan, Madeline Sellars, Marilyn Rohlmeier, and Mary Jane Witte.
As a result of the success of this Vacation Bible School, a decision was made to launch a church. The first Sunday service of Bulverde Baptist Mission was held August 26, 1973 in the chapel at Roy Aker’s Singing Hills Ranch. Approximately 200 people attended that first service with 29 people joining the church at that first service.
Through the first few years of this young church, two pastors served and led the church to meet the needs of the Bulverde community ~ Dr. Perry Webb served as the interim pastor until Rev. John B. Witte was called to be the first pastor of BBC in March of 1974. As the church grew, the need for a permanent location was becoming an issue. The church moved to its first permanent building and current location in October of 1975 and was constituted as a Southern Baptist Church that same month. Over the years, the church had numerous pastors and staff members, but the church has never lost the missions mindset that launched the church in the beginning.
Along with numerous other mission projects the church has undertaken, in 1995 Bulverde Baptist sponsored a Hispanic Mission, which eventually constituted as a Church on its own. In 2005, BBC opened two local homes to IMB missionaries on state side furlough. These homes were donated to the church for the purpose of building the kingdom of God and that is exactly what they did by offering a place of refuge and rest to those in the mission field.
It is the desire of Bulverde Baptist Church to continue to do the work and the will of God in the Bulverde/Spring Branch community. Our history is not long, but is rich in what the Lord has done in and through the lives of the members and those in the area. God has a great future for Bulverde Baptist Church…will you be a part of it?
